Star for Life started at Siphosabadletshe High School in South Africa in 2005. Ever since, the goal has been the same \u2013 to empower children and young people to take their education, their health and their life dreams seriously. <\/p>\n

Through workshops, exercises and music, children and young people learn about everything from puberty, consent, sexual and reproductive health, relationships and hygiene to study discipline, empowerment, respect for others, creative expression and entrepreneurship. <\/p>\n

Our unique programme strengthens the learners and motivates them to invest in their education and make wise life decisions. The aim is to replace destructive behaviors with positive ones and help learners realise their dreams, step by step. Star for Life\u2019s Mobile Health Unit, give young people in southern Africa similar support to that which Swedish children get when they go to the school nurse. Here you can be weighed , measured and have your eyesight checked \u2013 but that\u2019s not all. You can also learn about puberty, menstruation, hygiene, and nutrition. This is where we help young people understand consent and cohabitation, sexual and reproductive health, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV and AIDS. In addition, our experienced staff offer healthchecks, psychosocial counselling and distribute menstrual protection (menstrual pads or menstrual cups depending on age \/maturity and local conditions, such as access to running water). <\/span><\/p>\n

Of all young people and adults aged 15-49, 17.8% were HIV-positive. HIV prevalence is significantly higher for women (23.5%) than for men (12.1%). An estimated 160,000 adult South Africans became newly infected with HIV in 2022, or 430 people every day. <\/p>\n

Among young people aged 10-19, i.e. the age group our programme serves, an estimated 28,000 were newly infected with HIV in 2022. This corresponds to almost 80 learners every day. About two-thirds of these newly infected young people are girls. <\/p>\n

The situation in Namibia is largely the same as in South Africa, but the number of people affected is lower due to the much smaller population. As a reminder of the struggle against apartheid, as a national anthem for this diverse nation and as an important source of strength in everyday life. That\u2019s why music has played a central role in Star for Life\u2019s work since it was founded in South Africa. <\/p>\n

Under the leadership of Ken Wennerholm and G\u00f6ran Rudbo from the artist duo Triple & Touch, Star for Life in Concert has brought together Swedish schoolchildren to sing with the South African Star Choir, the artists Ntombie and Phakamani and some of Sweden \u2018s most popular stars such as Cazzi Opeia, M\u00e5ns Zelmerl\u00f6w, Sonja Ald\u00e9n, Dregen and John Lundvik. A musical joyride that has been delighting audiences all over Sweden for the past 17 years. This is how we showcase Star for Life and bring people closer to each other. But this is only possible through close cooperation between Star for Life, local businesses, sports clubs and schools. <\/p>\n
